Because you are using a VPN, you will need to install a power BI standard gateway and then configure the connection to gateway on your gateway is where you will install the VPN to connect your database server. I could see that error you are getting is related to failed connection with SQL Server.
The error, "error 25- Connection string is not valid" indicates that its  preventing the database client from establishing a valid connection to the server.
1. Check if you are using the correct string to connect.
2.Just use the instance name and do not use the HOST NAME
