Parameters and the PowerBI Service

Hi all, been reading up on parameters (I am a novice at this).  Have a few questions:

 

  • Can I create parameters and use them in the PowerBI service now?  I see it in the Dataset settings on the service.
  • If yes, do I still have to the publish the model as a PBIT file and if yes can this be scheduled to refresh?
  • If yes, will a user be prompted immediately when opening a report, and is it easy to change the parameter while in the report?

I hope the answer is YES to using parameters in the service.

    Hey Razorbx13 ,

     

    you can use power query parameters in Power BI Service.

    Also you can set a different value for a parameter in Power BI Service than in Power BI Desktop and for that reason create a different behavior.

    You can publish the file as PBIX, you don't have to use PBIT.

    Why would the user be prompted? Is that a behavior you would like to have?

      Prompted: well would like the user to enter a month end date as a parameter and have that filter throughout all pages of my report.  So first I see the parameter in the service and set it but do not know how a user would change it.  Am I missing something?

        Hi Razorbx13 ,

         

        In your case, you only need to create a calendar table and put the date field in the slicer or filter, as shown in the figure below.
