PBI lost connections to multiple OneDrive pbix files

Hi,

There are around 20 pbix files having been uploaded to PBI Service over the year that now get an error "We are unable to locate the file on OneDrive for Business. Please check that the file exists in this location."

Some files have not been changed for months, the location does exist and I can upload new pbix without an issue. There are other reports originated from the same sharepoint folders and they work fine.

I have multiple dashboards, row level security models, another reports reutilising the same semantic models, hundreds users - all of these will be affected, if I have to reload the original pbix files.

Any working solution for the problem?

Hi @andreiak ,

Hope all is going well.

I would appreciate it if you have checked that the location actually exists.

I think once it is lost you have to recreate it.

My suggestion is to use the shared dataset feature to ensure that other datasets depend on the shared dataset.

Regarding the problem you are having, there is a similar link:

HI @v-huijiey-msft ,

I've checked other posts re the issue, the recommendation is always the same - to reload the pbix.

Some reports are independent from others, I don't think that the shared dataset is relevant here.

Just to be clear - the connection was lost to pbix files, not to data sources like csv or xls files.

Hi @andreiak ,

Thank you for your reply and patience.

1. In the Power BI service, navigate to the datasets for the affected reports and verify the file path specified under the dataset settings.

Ensure that the path matches the current location of the files on OneDrive for Business.

2. It is possible that the connection issue is related to authentication. Try re-authenticating the OneDrive for Business data source in the Power BI service.

Go to Settings>Datasets, select your dataset, and update the credentials for the OneDrive for Business data source.

Review the document to ensure all configurations are correct:

Refresh a semantic model from OneDrive or SharePoint Online - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

If after these steps the problem is still not resolved and it is important to you, perhaps you could submit feedback.

Hi @v-huijiey-msft ,

Thanks for your replay. Howevere, as I mentioned before, nothing has changed since the reports were updated a few months ago - the file locations are the same. I've also tried to re-authenticate the data sources with no impact.

Could you be so kind to explain where to find a file path in the dataset settings? I can't find this option, but it would be very handy, indeed.

Many thanks.

Hey @andreiak ,

If it did work and does not now work I am wondering if the path changed - not necesarily the exact location of the file but in the path - like the site or one of the subsite before it gets to your data?

Also, if it works after you republish, did your password change?  Or, did the ownership in the Service version change from you to somebody else?

Hey,

Nothing has changed. Other reports sourced from the same location work as usual.

The password has changed many times as some reports have been created over a year.

For some impacted files I have been an owner from the start, for others I took the ownership later, some of them are still owned by my teammate - I can't find a correlation.
