PBI Dataset refresh failure due to inactivity

Hi all,

PBI dataset  is supposed to be refreshing daily on a set schedule that we set up a while back. Can anyone tell me why it isn’t refreshing? It speaks to a token due to inactivity but again it was on a daily scheduled refresh which appears to have stopped working.

Current refresh error as of 12/23/22

Data source error:

CredentialType":"OAuth2","DatasourceType":"Web"},"details":[{"code":"DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingErrorMessage","detail":{"type":1,"value":"AADSTS700082: The refresh token has expired due to inactivity. The token was issued on 2022-09-16T15:04:46.8742830Z and was inactive for 90.00:00:00.\r\nTrace ID: 778312b1-e012-4594-a597-e6ed5e85f400\r\nCorrelation ID: 5dff2675-59cd-4960-81f3-34c2a0a0b414\r\nTimestamp: 2022-12-23 15:30:16Z"}},{"code":"DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingErrorMessage","detail":{"type":1,"value":"AADSTS700082: The refresh token has expired due to inactivity. The token was issued on 2022-09-16T15:04:46.8742830Z and was inactive for 90.00:00:00.\r\nTrace ID: 778312b1-e012-4594-a597-e6ed5e85f400\r\nCorrelation ID: 5dff2675-59cd-4960-81f3-34c2a0a0b414\r\nTimestamp: 2022-12-23

    Hi Anonymous ,

In Power BI Service, After two months of inactivity, scheduled refresh on your dataset is paused. A dataset is considered inactive when no user has visited any dashboard or report built on the dataset. When scheduled refresh is paused, the dataset owner is sent an email. The refresh schedule for the dataset is then displayed as disabled. To resume scheduled refresh, revisit any dashboard or report built on the dataset.

For more details, you can read related document: Configure scheduled refresh - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

        Hi dlopez ,

I believe that this can not be disabled.  But, why would you want to disable it?  If nobody is looking at or using a report why would you want to keep it running?

  • Hi Anonymous ,

It seems to me that your token expired and that you need to refresh it and/or get a new token. It might just be that the token and Power BI repsonse reads as "inactive" as opposed to "expired".

The inactive part might be from a lack of use of the report itself and then the refresh was de-activated????  Maybe?  And that in turn would stop the refresh and then the token would go inactive...  Maybe
