One drive Sync issue
Hello Venuppu, Thanks for your time. The mentioned points are really helpful and i checked all of them. one drive sync is on.. and it is synced to the sharepoint but still have the same error. To publish directly from power bi desktop will resolve the issue for now but it will stop the sync with sharepoint so every time we need to refresh file locally and publish it which is time taking and we cannot publish a new file for now as it will change the report link and users will face the issue. We think that this is server bug from microsoft end and raised a ticket. We will see when they get back to us.

Here’s a step-by-step approach that should help to clarify the issue:
1.Ensure the .pbix file has fully synced to SharePoint/OneDrive before Power BI tries to refresh it. If the file is still syncing or partially uploaded, Power BI may treat it as a local file, which can cause sync errors.
2.Make sure you're signed into Power BI Desktop and OneDrive/SharePoint with the same account. If the accounts differ, Power BI may not recognize the file as cloud-synced and will prompt you to save it again.
3.If the issue is related to the dataset rather than the file itself, you can try below:
a.Go to the Power BI Service > Dataset Settings.
b.Check if the OneDrive refresh is enabled.
c.If the “Sync with OneDrive” toggle is disabled, re-enable it and re-publish the file.
- Power BI uses the dataset metadata to refresh data, not the file itself. Ensure the dataset is correctly configured
Microsoft has introduced a stricter policy for OneDrive/SharePoint file sync to prevent security gaps. If your file was co-authored or modified by multiple users, this might trigger sync issues.
If the issue persists, try this workaround:
Download the .pbix file from SharePoint.
Open it in Power BI Desktop.
Re-publish it directly to the Power BI workspace.
This bypasses the OneDrive sync and ensures the dataset is refreshed cleanly.
