On-premises Gateway Issues
Good morning,
I hope someone can help me with this. I have been trying to work on using the Power BI Service.
Initially, I had some trouble with refreshing my datasets through the BI Service and then realised that i needed to use a personal Power BI gateway. Which I then installed. Frustratingly I initally installed the on-premises data gateway and not the on-premises data gateway (personal mode).
Then, to add to my woes, I accidentally deleted the gateway that was listed in the on-premises data gateways section of the Power BI service:
I know that my gateway service is running
I am also now able to refresh the connections and data-set for my report from within my Power BI Service.
My questions/issues are:
- I foolishly forgot the gateway name i defined when installing the On-Premises Gateway on my machine, how/where do I find it? (I do believe I have the key)
- How do I re-install/re-add that connection into my Power BI Service?
- Or am I completely misunderstanding this entire concept?

1. under gateway installation folder C:\program files\... you should find a file called "Gateway Properties" the name is there
2. when you install gateway on a machine you can do a fresh install or recover an existing one with the recovery key, this will recreate the destroyed gateway and map it to the cloud
my question is why are you using personal instead of enterprise? the latter is best practice.
there're very few reasons to use personal instead of enterprise like doing R or Python script during Power Query steps.
