On Premises Gateway - Windows Password Change

Hello,

I am the only person in my organisation who creates and publishes Power BI reports.

I use an On-premies gateway to connect all my data sources.

The Authentication method I use for any excel files is my Windows username and password.

The problem is, when I have to change my password (periodically, when IT send the 'you need to change your password' emails) I have to change each data source individually.

Is there a way I can only update my new password once (for all data sources that use my credentials, rather than having to do them one by one)?

Or, should I be asking IT to set me up with a service account where the password doesn't change?

Thanks,

Amy

    Hi _Amy_ ,

So far, to my knowledge, if the password changed, you must change the credentials in Power BI Service Portal one by one.

You could try to store your data on a separate server and do not need to change the password.

    Hi _Amy_

What did you end up doing ? Did you find a way to make it work ?

    Best,

  • Hello Amy, have you found the solution for this issue? As I am facing the same issue.

  • Hi _Amy_ If you use the File connector your only authentication method will be Windows. Then you have two options, either have your password set to never expire of use a Service Account with the password set to never expire.

You can also move the files to another location e.g. SharePoint which will have additional authentication methods other than a Service Account.

      Hi Wikkleyn_81

The re-authentication for every single dataset (one by one) is also required even the files to be moved to the location in Sharepoint, if my understanding was correct.

Sounds like the only solution for the moment is to use a Service Account with the password set to never expire and hopefully Microsoft PBI team can make this easy in the future as I think lots of uses would be suffering from this issue if they have many datasets from different sources (excle from local file server \ sharepoint etc.).

      Thanks,

What I mean is, to make it easy for re-authentication when the windows password is changed - For instance, each type of connections (File \ Analysis Services \ Web \ Folder \ Sharepoint) only needs one time of re-authentication, instead of using a Service Account with the password set to never expire.
