On Prem installation questions

Hello,

I am sure this question was asked multiple times but I wasn't able to find a clear answer.

1.

I need to install PowerBI on Prem and I need to know what kind of licneces I need.

I have "SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance" licence, can I split the installation on two maschines?

- SQL EE on Server 1

- Power BI on Server 2 (configure databse on Server 1)

Do I use the same licence key on both installation, is it ok? or I need to licence 2 Servers to EE?

2.

Do I need Power BI Pro licenes for the developers/publishers or are included in the original SQL licence?  How do you purchase them? I need to mention that the network is not internet connected.

Thanks,

George

Hi @Guest31ro,

  1. According to Microsoft's licensing documentation, if you have a SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance license, you have the right to install Power BI Report Server on a separate server. So, yes, you can split the installation on two machines as you described. However, both machines will need to be licensed for SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance. You cannot use the same license key for both installations; you will need to obtain a separate license key for each server.

  2. Power BI Pro licenses are separate from SQL Server licenses and are required for developers and publishers. Power BI Pro licenses allow users to create and share reports, collaborate with others, and access content shared by others. Power BI Pro licenses are purchased through the Power BI service, which requires an internet connection. However, if your network is not internet connected, you may be able to purchase Power BI Pro licenses through a Microsoft partner or reseller who can help you with offline activation.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,
