If I am trying to acces Oracle databases do I need install the Oracle Client and OCMT, or will just OCMT suffice.

At this point I am getting a tnsnames error, the tnsnames folder is located in the PBIGatewaySvc Account user folder

Thanks!

Hi @109264,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum. I have identified few workarounds that may help resolve the issue. Please follow these steps:

To connect to Oracle databases using the On-Premises Data Gateway, it is necessary to install the Oracle Client on the same machine where the gateway is installed. The Oracle Connector Management Tool (OCMT) alone is insufficient, as it relies on the Oracle Client to function correctly.

The TNSNAMES error you are encountering likely indicates that the gateway service cannot locate or access the tnsnames.ora file. Please ensure:

  • The Oracle Client (64-bit) is installed, and the tnsnames.ora file is correctly configured and placed in the path specified by the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.
  • The path is accessible by the Power BI Gateway Service account, and you restart the Gateway service after making any configuration changes.

For detailed steps, please refer to the official Microsoft documentation links:

Set up your Oracle database connection - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn
Manage your data source - Oracle - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
Move data from Oracle to Fabric Lakehouse via pipeline and on-premises data gateway - Microsoft Fabr...
