On-Prem Gateway Newer release Best Practice

Hello Experts,

We are in a process of updating the On-prem gateway to the latest release & would be possibly doing it on a monthly basis.

What are the best practices that could be followed while updating to the newer release of the Power BI Gateway ?

What kind of files we need to backup ?

what are the best possible rollback options ?

Eg: We are using proxy for Internet & have implemented the mentioned article. So do we need to backup the configurator files & so in order to restore if at all they are overwritten with the newer release.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-proxy

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ambarish Kunte

Hi @ambarishkunte

The most important thing is to make sure you have got the Recovery Key known before an upgrade. If anything goes wrong you could re-install and use the recovery key to keep all existing data sources.

Also good idea to keep the backup of the configuration files.

Other than that I have not had any issues doing this monthly now for a few years.

Hi, @ambarishkunte

As GilbertQ said, the recovery key can be the best possible rollback credential you should keep, it is set when the on-premises data gateway is installed, you can use this credential to migrate, restore, or take over an on-premises data gateway.
