On-Prem Data Gateway proxy issue

Hi Fabric Community,

Our server group has decided to shut down and remove all proxy servers.  Is there a way to configure the On-prem data gateway service without a proxy server?

Thanks,

  • Hi DKHUghes55 ,

from my point of view an On-premises Data Gateway does not require a proxy server to function. As long as the gateway server has direct outbound HTTPS (TCP 443) access to the required Microsoft endpoints, it can communicate with the Power BI/Fabric service without a proxy.

Microsoft also has a networking requirements page that lists the required endpoints:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-communication

    Hope this helps!

    Best regards!

    Hello DKHUghes55,

Yes. The On-premises Data Gateway does not require a proxy server if your organization's network allows direct outbound internet access.

A few things to verify after removing the proxy:

    • Ensure the gateway server can establish direct outbound HTTPS (TCP 443) connections to the required Microsoft Fabric/Power BI endpoints.

    • Remove any proxy configuration that was previously applied to the gateway service or Windows.

    • Confirm that your firewall allows the required Microsoft endpoints and ports used by the gateway.

    • After the proxy is removed, restart the On-premises Data Gateway service and verify that it reconnects successfully in the Power BI/Fabric portal.

If your organization blocks direct internet access, you'll need to allow the required Microsoft service endpoints through the firewall; otherwise, the gateway won't be able to communicate with the Fabric/Power BI service.
