Hello all
Im getting an error in the Power BI Service when it tries to refresh my report. The error is
There's not enough memory to complete this operation. Please try again later when there may be more memory available.
How can this occur and what is the remedy. Thanks for the insights. My report is only 355MB
Hi everyone,
I'm facing a very weird issue.
I can't access to a report in the service. Despite a applies a filter in order to limit the number of calculations, it still giving me the same issue: Out of Memory.
This report (or at list the draft I made to built the report is now stuck) still working in my dataset in power bi desktop.
My issue is I can't access to it, no way to change anything because it is not loading the page.
How can I fix that without deleting my entire page?
thanks for your helps guy 🙂
Hi I noticed my reports again are having the out memory error this morning when most of my report datasets are refreshing. Is anyone else seeing this today? Yesterday everything was working fine.
Thanks
I had a lot of trouble with a very big and complicated report.
Once I let PBI refresh for 7 hours and got the error "out of memory".
I changed some settings to improve the performance but that didnt worked.
I fixed it by adding 8 additional GB to my RAM (now 16GB in total).
I concur that this last week we started to have the same issue. Random reports failing randomly to refresh a given time only to refresh in the next cycle. The reports weren't changed and we don't have any that gets closed to 1GB limit mentioned in the post above.
Thx
Yeah it's a known issue per a thread i have going with the Microsoft Support team so hopefully there is a fix in place in the near future.
Thanks
Hi All,
The last 4 days I've had 1-2 different report datasets fail due this message "There's not enough memory to complete this operation. Please try again later when there may be more memory available."
These reports normally refresh fine within mintues in the service and it's not the same reports failing each day. Like I said before I think it's the same Power BI service issue I experienced a few months ago when Microsoft support let me know it was an issue on their end. @bwhitlock your situation could be different if it's only the same report but I think it's a larger issue potentially.
Can anyone from Microsoft advise if this is a larger issue for customers?
Thanks
Hi @bwhitlock
Your issue is that when you refresh your dataset and you will get an error that memory is not enough in Power BI Service.
From your statements , your workspace is in shared capacity not dedicated capacity (need Premium license).
The connection mode in your report should be Import mode. The Size of your report is 355MB, but we need to understand our pbix file has been highly compressed. When you publish your report, your data and your credential will be stored in Power BI Service. The size of dataset is near 355MB. The dataset is highly compressed as well. When you refresh your dataset, Power BI will unzip the dataset into memory. And Power BI will upload the new data into memory as well. So the memory you need to refresh your dataset is at least 355MB *2.
In shared capacity, you have a memory restrication. So if the memory you need is larger than restrication, service will show a memory error to show you s larger memory requests.
For more details you may refer to this blog: How capacities function.
For more details about uncompressed data(memory) in shared capacity: Tourbleshooting
Please check whether you can succeed to refresh your report in Power BI Desktop.
Sometimes this issue will be caused by data model with poor logic ,too large data source or bad query as well.
Run query needs memory as well. So bad query ,poor logic data model and too large data source will cause the memory you need to refresh far beyond twice the compression size.
Please check your report and improve your data model, add some filter on data source to load data necessary and optmize your query.
For reference to optmize data source: Blog
Or you can purchase Premium license and assign a premium capacity to your worksapce.
Best Regards,
Rico Zhou

Hi,
I've been getting the same refresh failure messages on a few of my reports but others are refreshing fine. I think it's a Power BI Service issue as a few months back I had to put in a support ticket for the same thing and Microsoft support had to fix something internally. It worked but seems like the same issue has popped up again.
It looks like it happened across several of my reports of which non have been changed except one. We dont use premium service
HI @bwhitlock ,
There could be a number of reasons for this. One area might be that you have Premium set up and have not allocated enough space. Another could be your data inputs (import vs direct mode). Another could be your query. ANother could be your data relationships between tables.
Here are some articles to help you find the issue:
