Now there is data flows, do we still need a data warehouse?

Hi all,

The company I am working for is considering a data warehouse to centralise data.

Now I've heard of data flows enabling self-service ETL and I'm kind of wondering whether a data warehouse is still needed.

Would like to hear your experienced and thoughts on this. Do we still need a datawarehouse, or not?

In addition you should check whether dataflows meet your

    1. Scale requirements (amount of data) - while we are activly working to support larger scale, currently dataflows are still limited, especially in computation over large data sizes.
    2. Data freshness (especially if you are using direct query, which isn't supported yet for dataflows)

    Hi Anonymous,

For your scenario, I'm afraid that you should check if dataflows supports your data source.

If dataflows in power bi supports your data source, then you don't need a data warehouse.

In addition, for a deeper dive on dataflows you can read the dataflows whitepaper by Amir Netz.
