Not sure if I need a gateway or something else

Hi, hoping someone can provide some guidance.

We have a series of dashboards that connect to an external database (not managed by us). The database service will only allow a single IP to be whitelisted (they provide their own front end for most of the interactions with the DB).

This is fine when we are on-site but it does mean that we cannot develop the dashboards when we are working from home. Additionally, from what I have understood (and this may be completely incorrect) we need a gateway to be able to schedule refreshes on the data set (currently I am manually doing this).

What kind of data gateway do we need?

Hi @RFJammer - you’re correct that a data gateway is necessary to handle scheduled refreshes in Power BI when connecting to an external database.

as mentioned setup like yours, the On-premises Data Gateway (standard mode) is the best choice. This will provide both scheduled refresh capabilities and enable multiple users to access the data and reports. The gateway should be installed on a machine that resides within the network of the whitelisted IP (e.g., your office network).

Additionally, consider using a VPN if you need remote access during development, or explore cloud-hosted gateways if your organization is open to cloud solutions.

Hope this helps.
