New columns not appearing in report published on PowerBI service after refresh

Hello,

I have a report that is connected to an Azure SQL database and I've added some new columns to that database.

When I refresh the report in PowerBI Desktop, the new columns appear without any problem, but when I refresh the same report that is published to the PowerBI service, the new columns do not appear.

I've since learned that the (scheduled) refresh on the PowerBI service doesn't refresh the schema of the data (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/refresh-data). Can anyone explain to me why that is and/or give me a clue on how to automatically refresh the schema?

A dataset refresh is not designed to change the model itself, only the data that feeds into it. To update the model, republish the report from Power BI Desktop.

Do you expect to be adding new columns frequently?
