Need to disable Publish to PBI Service

Is there anyway to allow users to link their PBI desktops to a dataset in a certain workspace, while also preventing them from making any changes to that dataset or any rpts in that workspace?

Hi, @nosubstitute959

If you want to connect to the dataset in power bi desktop, you must have the edit permissions for this dataset. Therefore, the person who has edit permission to the dataset should at least have the Contributor Role, so he can also remove the dataset from the workspace. However, you can not make any changes to your dataset in power bi service or desktop.(change field name or delete columns). If you want someone can connect to your dataset in desktop without inviting him to your workspace. You can try to publish app.

Hello @nosubstitute959

If you want to prevent a user to access your datasets in Power BI the best option to choose will be not giving access to that user for the desired Dataset or the workspace and which will be done only through Power BI Service.

As far as my information we cannot link your desktop to any dataset in the Power BI Service, it is used to publish the datasets and reports to the Service.

IF YOU LIKE MY ANSWER PLEASE ACCEPT IT AS A SOLUTION AND GIVE KUDOS

Nimai
