Multiple Power Bi accounts same gateway

Hello,

i have a server with multiple users.
i need configurate one gateway with account1@companie1.com and account1@companie2.com

it's possible run the same gateway or two different gateway with differents power bi accounts with domains differents at same server?

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Users from different domains fall into AAD B2B Power Bi

Reading the Limitations and considerations, I didn't see that i should a problem for Guest users to access the Gateway. I Let you verify

Yes, you can run one Power BI gateway but only with one account, or use one standard + multiple personal gateways on the same server. For full separation, you need different servers or VMs.

I'd be glad to assist you with the Power BI Gateway scenario.

Current Limitations:

In Power BI services, you cannot directly configure a single on-premises data gateway to work with multiple Power BI accounts from different domains on the same server. This is because the gateway registration process associates it with a specific user account.

Recommended Approaches:

Here are two effective strategies to achieve your goal:

  1. Separate Gateways for Each Account:

    • Install and configure distinct on-premises data gateways on the server, each registered with a different Power BI service account (account1@companie1.com and account1@companie2.com).
    • This approach ensures clear separation and avoids potential conflicts.
  2. Shared Data Sources with Access Control (Preferred for Multiple Users within the Same Organization):

    • If the accounts belong to the same organization and you primarily need data access for multiple users within that organization, consider these steps:
      • Set up one on-premises data gateway registered with one of the Power BI service accounts (e.g., account1@companie1.com).
      • Within Power BI service, configure data sources using this gateway.
      • Grant access (View, Edit, or Manage) to other users (including account1@companie2.com) for the configured data sources. This allows them to use these data sources in their reports without needing to set up individual gateways.

Additional Considerations:

  • Security: If you choose the shared data source approach, ensure appropriate access control is in place to safeguard sensitive data.
  • Scalability: If you anticipate a large number of users or complex data access needs, separate gateways might be more manageable in the long run.

Key Takeaways:

  • While a single gateway cannot directly serve multiple accounts from distinct domains, the two recommended approaches provide flexibility for your scenario.
  • Consider the number of users, security requirements, and future scalability when making your decision.
  • When sharing data sources, prioritize data security by implementing proper access control measures.
  • Power BI services offer robust features for managing on-premises data gateways and ensuring secure data access.

Hi @marciofornarii

As far as I have seen it is a one to one relationship. This means you can only install and configure one gateway on one server.

What you could do is have a single gateway installed and share the gateway with multiple users?

Hello, thanks for response.
it's not possible share the gateway because the server is to a Saas software. Each user has your power bi accounts, reports, etc.. 🥲

I think the solution is create a vpn and install the gateway in other server, but I didn't wanted this

@marciofornarii

You can only install one Gateway per server but you can give access and edit permissions as Admin of the gateway to multiple users in the power bi service.

Olá @marciofornarii , pode passar o passo a passo de como você conseguiu fazer ?
Estou com esse mesmo caso. Só que eu não estou usando o Azure, estou usando a propria conta do PowerBI. Duas contas com dominios diferente.
