Microsoft Fabric Signup Redirect After Logging Into app.powerbi.com

All,

Long time forum lurker, first time poster.

Beginning last Friday (8/3/2023), each time I log on to app.powerbi.com, I am immediately redirected to a signup page for Microsoft Fabric (screenshot below).  To my knowledge, nothing has changed at my organization.  I confirmed last Friday that others in my organization with similar access profiles, were able to login succesfully with no redirect.  So far, it's just me.  The prompt indicates I made a selection of Microsoft Fabric free, but I do not recall select anything.  Certainly, within the time between login and redirect, there was not enough time to physically select anything on screen anyway.

I have attempted the following:

  • Log out/Log in
  • reboot
  • use Edge, chrome, Mozilla browsers
  • clear browser cache
  • log in on different machines
  • Tried logging in on different days
  • Logged into Azure portal to see if fabric or other subscriptions have changed (they have not)

So far, no change.  The only other variable I can think of worth mentioning is I am being added to a project in our organization that works out of an azure-based SQL server data environment.  Last Wednesday and Thursday, I spent part of the day poking around in the Azure portla to familiarize myself.  But, both Wednesday and Thursday, I had no issues logging into the Power BI service.  Friday, I was looking into Azure Data Factory, but I did not create, modify or otherwise change anything (that I am aware of).

My assumption is a login/account association that I do not have access to modify.  I am also assuming that if the Admin group adds a Fabric subscription to my account, this may be resolved.  I'd like to understand what changed (or if it was my fault for some reason).  Also, the IT group may not wish to go down the Fabric path.  Does anyone know why all of a sudden I am being redirected to signup for Microsoft Fabric?  Does anyone know what features, terminology, etc. (other than the obvious mentioned in this post, of course) I should direct our admins to look at with my account?  Appreciate any help provided.

Many thanks,

BB

Fabric Free is the rebranding of Power BI Free.  Have a chat with your

Tenant Admin to verify which licenses have been assigned to your user.

The May 2023 Power BI Blog details this abput half way down the page.

Hello BB, and welcome to the forum! 😊

It's difficult to say for certain what might have caused the issue you're experiencing. However, it's possible that your account may have been associated with a Microsoft Fabric subscription, either intentionally or unintentionally. It's also possible that there may have been some changes to your organization's IT settings or policies that could be causing the redirect.

I would recommend reaching out to your organization's IT group or Power BI administrator for assistance. They should be able to check your account settings and determine if there have been any changes that could be causing the issue. They may also be able to provide more information on whether your organization has a Microsoft Fabric subscription and if it is necessary for your work.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions. 😊

@Alef_Ricardo_ ,  this post is solved, and verified by the OP Tenant

Admin after user licensing was updated.  There was no trial of Fabric

involved.     Refer to accepted solution.

Hi, I am facing the issue now. This is for an account in client organisation. They told they have given Fabric free licensing. Which license should be assigned so that I wont face this issue?

The same thing is happening to us for some users.  When they attempt to sign in for PowerBI they get redirected to the "You've selected Microsoft Fabric free" login page.  I don't even see a "switch to other account" option, just creating a new one.  It appears to be related to already being signed in to an account on a different domain.  Using an incognito window works like before and takes you to the normal Microsoft sign in page.  If it was just me I would use that workaround but I don't think "clear your cache" or "open an incognito window" is going to work with all of our customers.

Hello,

We had this problem after upgrading from PowerBI Pro to  PowerBI Premium. Instead of seeing the reports, microsoft redirects users to a page Microsoft Fabric Free.  To get around it,  you can enter a phone number, uncheck the boxes for free information, then click the blue button to continue.   After the the users were able to see their workspaces as usual.

The issue has already been identified and solved and confirmed with the User's Tenant Admin as a Licensing issue.   Refer to reply Message 6 of 8 where it states:

"Thank you! The root cause ended up being a conflict of licensing. Somehow, my user account was correctly associated with the premium license (so I could dev and upload just fine), but when I accessed the service online, it would attempt to access my license (referenced from portal.office.com/account) which did not have Power BI licensing. Not sure how that happened, but when that was brought into alignment, problem solved.

Thanks again!
BB"

I am really glad to hear that this worked out the way it did.   You and your organization have much work ahead it seems.    Please feel free to give me Kudos if my solution has been helpful.

@aj1973 ,

Many thanks for a quick response.  I am reaching out as we speak to have that done.  One question still remains though.  Why would it only impact my login?  We have a team of 4 people that all regularly use the Power BI service and I am the only one experiencing this issue.  I specifically reached out to each of them to confirm whether they had signed up for (or otherwise intentionally interacted with) fabric, and the answer as a unanimous 'No'.

In any case, thank you for your help.

Hi @Anonymous

The best thing to do is your Power Bi Admin would disable Microsft Fabric from Admin Portal to all organization.

aj1973_0-1691425352240.png

then reconnect, the browser won't redirect you to Microsft Fabric.

Also you can try changing the browser or empty the cache if the Admin is not available

My administrator is being redirected to Fabric Free trial when he tries to access the admin portal. Is there any other way to disable that setting without entering apps.powerbi.com?
