Local Edits of SemanticModel (connected to Azure through Gateway) not Publishing tothe Master Model

I have the ability to programmatically create semantic models from a web app as DirectQueries and then bind them to a gateway so that we can access a private azure database.  This is working fine.

However, my users need to be able to clone my model, access them from PBIDesktop to update them (adding measures etc) and then publish them back into the portal.  This doesn't SEEM to be possible.  I am able to open the SM in desktop (from the models tab) and add a measure but when I publish it forces me to save a report (which is annoying but maybe harmless) and then the report is published.  The SM doesn't seem to be published as well - even after refreshing in the portal I cannot see the measure I added.  I CAN click "Make changes to this model" but I get a popup "A directQuery connection is required.." and the button is "Add a local model" which then forces me to connect from my local to the database with credentials which I do NOT want to expose.

I want to allow the cloning of the initial model and then AFTER adding measures/DAX logic to be able to push those changes back up.  I'm also aware that there's a preview function that allows semantic model edits inside the webportal - maybe that would help here?  We don't currently have that enabled so hoping to find out for sure before hounding the PBI admin for that change.

    Hi ddelapasse,

    Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Community Forum.

    1.Users can only publish the report, not the semantic model (SM).

    2."Edit Model" feature is not enabled in Power BI Service.

    Please make  the changes as suggested like below;

    1.Enable "Edit Model" in Power BI Service, This lets users directly edit the SM without exposing credentials.

    2.Modify Publishing Workflow that will Allow users to modify reports and create templates for local edits, while admins handle SM updates.

    Please continue using Microsoft community forum.
