Is refreshing stuff in Power BI a very common thing to do?
For some reason our stuff is dying, and I'm wondering if we are the only ones who refresh via the gateways. Maybe the other customers are uploading their data via pbix.
Anyway for those of you who refresh via a gateway, you may want to know that there are at least two well-known bugs that make this unreliable.
and
The explanation implies that things will die, for various reasons that are unknowable to the customer:
You might experience intermittent refresh failures for semantic models and dataflows through the on-premises data gateway. Failures happen regardless of how the refresh was triggered, whether scheduled, manually, or over the REST API.
I've opened a support ticket and I think there are many others who have done so. I think it takes about dozen distinct cases before they agree to post the gateway bugs to the "known issues" page.
Anyway, I just wanted folks to know that refreshing stuff is a problem. It is not that "intermittent" either, from what I can tell. The other day I tried to publish a new Gen2 dataflow and it failed over and over and over again. Maybe by "intermittent" they mean that on certain days you are better off not coming to work. Today it seems to be working for once, but I'm not going to believe we are out of the woods until the known issue is removed from the list.
Another interesting thing to point out is that the Mindtree support folks are saying this is a problem with the November gateway, yet the refresh bug was reported back in September. I don't know how to reconcile those two things. And I certainly won't believe that updating to another gateway will fix the problems, if they are implying that Sept, Oct, and Nov are all buggy. Hi @dbeavon3
We appreciate your patience regarding the intermittent refresh failures affecting Power BI datasets and dataflows when using the on-premises data gateway.
Microsoft has acknowledged these issues as known bugs and has listed them on their Known Issues page:
Microsoft engineers are actively working on a fix, and we expect improvements in upcoming gateway updates.
Thanks and regards,
Cheri Srikanth
