Issues sharing PowerBi report for viewing in Sharepoint

Hi All,

I have a PowerBi Pro licence and have created a report that I want to share within the organisation that I work for. Initially I am looking to embed the report within a test page on a sharepoint site.

Using the PowerBi web part within sharepoint and the report URl from publishing to the powerbi service, I have been able to view the report within the sharepoint test page successfully.

However;

- a colleague with a PowerBi free account is prompted to 'upgrade the current power bi license to view the report'

- a colleague with no powerbi account has a prompt to sign up to PowerBi

I had read online that it should be possible for non powerbi users to view and interact with reports that were added to a sharepoint page? Am I misguided in my thought and if not, are their any tips to allow this method to work?

Many thanks,

Hi - this is my understanding based on experience and Embed a report web part in SharePoint Online - Power BI | Microsoft Learn, but I'm not an expert on licensing!!

  1. if the report and semantic model are in a Premium workspace, viewers (via Sharepoint or not) only need a free Power BI account to view the report
  2. if either the report or the semantic model are in a pro workspace, viewers (via Sharepoint or not) need a pro or PPU licence to view the report

Hope that helps!

You can't use SharePoint embeds to bypass licensing, they need a license to view (pro, or if you have premium that negates).
