Issues Installing on-premises data gateway

Hi everyone,

I am having troubles to reinstall (was mistakenly deleted) the on-premises data gateway on my work laptop. I got in-touch with work IT but unfortunately they don't know how to resolve this. Any support and help to be able to install this data gateway will a appreciated. Screenshots are below. Thank you.

Hi @Stephen10,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum. Also, thanks to @lbendlin,for his inputs on this thread.

The message “this specific request will need elevation” indicates that Windows is blocking the gateway installer because your account does not have administrator rights on your work laptop. Since an on-premises gateway installs system services, it must be installed with local admin permissions. In most organizations, only IT can approve or run those installations. I would recommend sharing this error with your IT team and asking them to either install the on-premises data gateway (personal mode) for you using an admin account or provide access to a centrally managed standard mode gateway if your organization already has one set up on a server.

At the same time, based on your screenshots, your dataset uses SharePoint Online as the data source which is already a fully cloud-based connection. For those sources, you do not need an on-premises gateway at all. Instead, you can complete the setup by going to Power BI Service → Workspace → Dataset → Settings → Gateway and cloud connections and ensuring SharePoint is listed under Cloud connections with your credentials signed in. If no on-premises systems are involved, this approach will allow refreshes to work without installing anything on your laptop.

Hi @Stephen10 ,

Please Install the Application with Run As Administrator Option and Use Admin account to Install. As you may have Mistakenly deleted the application Please use recover gateway option to restore all the connection if you have recovery Key.

Link to Restore Gateway:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-migrate

Let me know if this Works. Thanks

The Personal Gateway couldn't be installed either. The error was "this specific request will need elevation"

on-premises data gateway on my work laptop

Please don't do that.  The enterprise/standard version of the gateway is a service that expects a Windows Server OS, and a VM that is running 24/7.

You can install the Personal Gateway application on your laptop but it will only work when you laptop is powered up AND the application is running.
