Issue with Gen1 Dataflow not refreshing

We've run into a weird issue with Power BI service. We've had a Gen1 dataflow set up to get data from an API end point for awhile now and it's been working flawlessly and only started failing in early Jan 2025. The strange thing is, if we set up the same flow in Power BI Desktop and refresh, it would refresh fine with no issue. But the same would fail on Power BI Service. Even when we filter the data to only get 1 day worth of data. The error message in Power BI Service is also very unhelpful for troubleshooting. The Error simply give you the Request ID and Activity ID without telling you what the error is.

Hi @cath1ynn

The issue with your Power BI Service dataflow failing while the same API query works fine in Power BI Desktop is likely due to authentication, network restrictions, or API rate limits. Since Power BI Service runs in the cloud, it might be blocked by API security settings, such as IP whitelisting or stricter rate limits for cloud-based requests. Additionally, authentication settings in Power BI Service may not match what works in Desktop, so re-entering credentials in the service might help. Another possibility is that recent changes to Gen1 dataflows have introduced compatibility issues, and migrating to Gen2 dataflows could resolve them. Also, some APIs impose request throttling, which could be affecting the service-side refresh, so adding delays between requests might help. The error message in Power BI Service provides only a Request ID and Activity ID, making troubleshooting difficult, but checking API logs or contacting Microsoft Support can provide more details. Reviewing network access, updating authentication, and testing in a cloud environment (like Postman) can help pinpoint the issue. If none of these solutions work, raising a Microsoft support ticket may be necessary.

Hi ,

When I try to link my power bi desktop to Dataflow gen1 (below is the code in advanced editor), I have the below error message.

X19203659_1-1738856524053.png

Can someone try to help me on how to sort this error?
Thank you per advance!

kind regrads

This means it can't find the table in your dataflow. Or the guid from the workspace or dataflow are incorrect. Or the name is mispelled in the entity. It is also case sensitive.

Hi Jessy_D,

Thanks for your reply.
I double checked if there were any typos, there are none.

Where it is getting strange, is when I open a report without issue in power bi service (scheduled refresh), the query in power query (power bi desktop), linked to a dataflow seems to have the issue (as set out above) - not sure why?

Does anyone know where this is coming from?

Kind regards,

If you check my post and another post, you'll see there is currently an issue with gen 1 dataflows. It works fine in a semantic model or locally in Power BI, but not online. Microsoft is investigating this issue.

Hi @cath1ynn

Could you post the error so that we can see if there is anything else.

Is it going via a Gateway? If so can the Gateway be updated?
