Issue with Custom Connector in Power BI: Unable to Refresh

Hello everyone,

I'm facing an issue with Power BI and could use some help.

I'm using a custom connector in Power BI, and when I try to refresh for my dataset, I receive the following error message:

"You can't schedule refresh for this dataset because the following data sources currently don't support refresh: Data source for Query1."

Details:

  • The dataset uses a custom connector.
  • I thought I could resolve the issue using a data gateway, but I don't even see that option in Power BI Service for the report I'm trying to refresh.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any suggestions on how to enable the refresh for a dataset using a custom connector? Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello, unfortunately, I don't have the answer to your problem. In fact, I am also experiencing the same issue, and I am just recording it here to increase visibility. I am using a custom connector to fetch data from the ClickHouse database, I provided my credentials and made the connection. When I refresh the data in Power BI Desktop, the update is successful, but when I try to refresh it in the Power BI online service, I receive this same error message. The data is only updated in the online version when I republish the report with the updated data in Desktop.

The custom connector itself may not be the culprit.  How are you handing the parameters over to the connector?

Thank you for your suggestion. Here is how I'm currently handling parameters for the custom connector:

When I open the connector, I insert the URL to my data source without any endpoint.

Next, I insert a token that I generate from my data source.

Once connected, I can choose from different tables.

If I load a table and add some columns to a report, then publish the report and go to the PBI service, I encounter the issue mentioned in my original post.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Thanks!

You need to get that token in code, not via the UI.

I spoke with the developer of the custom connector, and it seems that putting the token in the URL is not possible. Is this required to get it to work?

That's not what I said. I said you need to acquire the token as part of the Power Query code. You can then present it to the API as part of the payload rather than in the URL

Hi,

I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean. Could you please provide an example? Do you need any additional information from me?

Thank you!
