Is this doable? Data gateways and separate companies

Hi PowerBI Community!

So here's the scenario that I need some help with - I'll use CUSTOMER (Company A) and SERVICE PROVIDER (Company B) to explain.

Both companies are subscribed to PowerBI service. They are separate companies.

SERVICE PROVIDER does some work for CUSTOMER, and houses this work data in a SQL Server. CUSTOMER would like to visualize this data in PowerBI reports. Could SERVICE PROVIDER set up a data gateway with this data, and have CUSTOMER connect to this data gateway, and the CUSTOMER could then create their own reports and publish it to their own PowerBI service?

Maybe I don't understand data gateways very well... Haha

Many Thanks!

Hi @GarlonYau

SERVICE PROVIDER could build a workspace and add CUSTOMER as a member. Then SERVICE PROVIDER can build reports by getting data from SQL Sever. SERVICE PROVIDER should install a gateway and configure it correctly.

Then SERVICE PROVIDER can share their Tenant URL (Help&Support - About Power BI) to CUSTOMER, and they can see the workspace , and the report(dataset) be shared in it.  As a member CUSTOMER can build report in this page.

Best Regards,

Rico Zhou

Hi there

As long as the Gateway is installed within the CUSTOMER site and is registered with a CUSTOMER Power BI Login that should work.
