Is a gateway neccessary for scheduled refresh from SQL?

I'm loading data from a couple of SQL queries that come from our company's databases. Do I need a gateway for this? I was a little confused by the infromation out there. I tried to refresh and schedule refreshes for a report in my workspace but I receive the following message:

"Scheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials. To start the refresh again, go to this dataset's settings page and enter credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate scheduled refresh."

If I don't need a gateway then I'm confused on the credentials. In my desktop it uses my windows based credentials, but do I need to change this for when it is published?
  • Hi there

If you are querying SQL Server On-Premise databases you would need to use the Gateway.

ideally when connecting to the SQL Server system a system account with the right permissions would be ideal.
