Inconsistent decimal Separator in KPI Visual (distance to goal style) in German localization

Hi everyone,

I hope one of you gurus can wave their magic wand and help me once again 🙂

TLDR:

Power BI Service set to German as language uses different decimal separators in KPI Visual when switching distance to target from percent to value.

  • Question 1: Is there a way to force Power BI to use a certain separator independent of Power BI Service language setting
  • Question 2: Why does the decimal separator differ when both show percentages just based on different "behind the scenes" values?

---------------------------------------------------------

I found an inconsistent behaviour in the KPI visual while having the Power BI Service language set to german.

More precisely, it`s about the decimal separator when switching from distance to target in percent vs distance to target as a value.

Set to when set to value, the decimal separator is a comma:

When set to percent it becomes a dot:

It becomes very apparent when comparing two different KPIs on the same page. Now I know Germany has a dot as a thousand separator and comma as the decimal separator.

In case anyone lands on this post in the future:

The problem was a bug within the KPI visual from the microsoft side where a locale setting was hardcoded. The problem should be fixed in the near future from microsoft.

Hi @Anonymous thanks a lot for your response!

I just opened a Bugticket for this behaviour as it is a lot more resource intensive / visual intensive to create multiple cards instead of just the KPI Visuals but it is at least an alternative!

Hi @Wienforth ,

Are you using KPI visual? As far as I know, its calculation and the format of the values are automatic, which cannot be modified manually and you cannot find the corresponding properties in the setting. If you want the value to display in the specified format, I recommend that you use the format function to create the measure and display the result on the card. The method of creating measures and using cards is more flexible than using KPI visual, and you can specify any format.

FORMAT function (DAX) - DAX | Microsoft Learn

Use custom format strings in Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Hi @Anonymous accepted as solution as it answers the question. It is not possible to define the decimal separator in a KPI visual independently.

I created a bug ticket directly with Microsoft for this. Just found another ticket gegarding the same error with an unsatisfactory answer:

https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Desktop/Display-error-decimal-point-instead-of-a-comma/td-p/3359568

Lets hope someone can wave their magic wand and fix it 🙂

Best regards

Timo
