IS powerBi is really self service

I want to ask if its real that if I created a Modle on AS and then powerbi reports on desktop which i publish on the site

I will give to a client ... that they can't

- edit the reports

- dashboard

- pin thier own Q&A

 

and what I can do is give them access to gateway to go create thier own dataset, everyone can create a reports that no one but himself can edit that reports...

 

if yes.. why should I use powerbi while I can use powerview on sharepoint that I can give anyone of users permissions to edit existing reports... or create new onse?

 

if no.. how can i make user edit the existing reports on powerview?

    Well to start with PowerView is effectively dead going forwards.

     

    All MSFT BI stack work is to happen through Power BI.

     

    Even SSRS is migrating in that direction, I would not be surprised if SQL 2018 has SSRS hosted on PowerBI or O365 type environment.

     

    That aside:

     

    Power BI offers security.

     

    SSAS Tabular models can use row level security in a way that never properly worked on SharePoint.  User opens a PBI report and the data filters BEFORE they see it, in SharePoint it was often possible for data to be displayed to the user and THEN go and security filter the rows.

     

    As for self service... is it as robust as MicroStrategy, Business Objects, or similar... no.  Not at all, those have entire metadata catalogues and warehouses that let users drag and drop and search and do all kinds of independent exploration.

     

    Power BI is more guided.  You build most of the reports, all of the models, and end users can take what is there, pin some of their own things, and tweak a few others.

     

    That said, in many instances that is quite sufficient.

     

    For analysts... no PBI isn't really the answer.  That said, they can still use Excel to connect to the SSAS models.

     

    SSAS Tabular models are great, the PBI visulaization platform and interface is...lacking sadly but one hopes it catches up.

     

    Right now Qlik, Tableau, and the other big warehouse vendors Business Objects, MicroStrategy, Cognos beat PBI for drag and drop report creation, etc...  those services also cost a lot more and require a dedicated data architect/BI architect.
