How to give only copy access to viewer?

Hi Experts,

Need some help in terms of access and facing dead lock here. Please share views.

I have two hundred plus users in my Power BI environment, out of that 10 members are developers (Contributor) and remaining 190 are consumers (viewers). Now my requirement is I want to give copy report access to my consumers(viewers) from Public workspace to their My workspace, I don't want to give them any modify access in Public Workspace.

Can you please suggest me how we can achieve this in Power Bi service?

Thank you.

Hi @itsmebvk

I expect it to work that way. I would first test it to make 100% sure.

HI @GilbertQ ,

As suggested I have removed access to one user (viewer) on certificate workspace but only shared a report with him, also gave built access to underlying Dataset. But still I am unable to see Copy or Copy to my workspaces option in anywhere?

Am I doing anything wrong?

please suggest.

Hi @itsmebvk

Could I ask how you are trying to copy the reports?

I would strongly suggest NOT using "My Workspace" these reports will not be accessible by others.

Hi @GilbertQ

Yes you are correct, the idea behind this requirement is we want users to copy a report from Workspace to Myworkspace do any extra modifications like adding columns or extra logic on their own copy which will be used only by that particular user.

We dont want users to modify reports in main workspace rather than that they copy it and do it in their My Workspace.

Please suggest.

Ahh ok

if that is the case I would give them access to the PBIX where they can copy it to a local copy and then upload to the Power BI Service

In my experience it is better to have a central model where all tables, columns and measures are stored. People could change measures to suit their needs.

Got it @GilbertQ . Other than that is there any alternative way like using Apps or changing role like that.?

Hi @itsmebvk

In order to do this the users will need to have the Build Permission to the underlying dataset permissions.

As far as I know that is the only way to allow then to build or copy

Hi @GilbertQ

Just to reconfirm, if we give built permission to users on Dataset they should be able to copy the report form Public work space to Private workspaces is that correct?
