How to connect to Dynamics F&O data?

How do I connect to the data of a Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations instance (hosted at xxxx.sandbox.operations.dynamics.com)?

(I want to be able to use the F&O data together with non-Dynamics data)

Do I need to connect to the SQL server directly?

Do I need to use some API instead?

In both cases, what are the connection details? what settings, permissions, credentials do I use?
