How to Use Streaming Dataset from Power BI Service in Power BI Desktop?

Hello Power BI Community,

I'm currently working on a project where I've created a streaming dataset in the Power BI service using the API feature. My goal is to use this streaming dataset for real-time analytics and visualizations. While I can see and interact with the dataset in the Power BI service without issues, I'm encountering difficulties when trying to use this streaming dataset in Power BI Desktop.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Created a streaming dataset in Power BI service using the API.
  2. Attempted to connect to this dataset from Power BI Desktop for further analysis and to build more complex reports.

However, it seems that the streaming dataset is not available or cannot be used directly in Power BI Desktop. I'm looking for guidance or a workaround that would allow me to utilize the streaming dataset within Power BI Desktop for more in-depth analysis and report building.

    Specific questions:

    • Is there a direct way to access and use streaming datasets created in Power BI service within Power BI Desktop?
    • If direct access is not possible, are there any recommended workarounds or alternative approaches to analyze and report on streaming data using Power BI Desktop?
    • Are there any specific settings or configurations in Power BI service or Desktop that I need to be aware of to enable this functionality?

Any insights, advice, or resources you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm particularly interested in any documentation or tutorials that cover this scenario.

Thank you in advance for your help!

      Thanks & Regards,
      @Anonymous

Hi @Anonymous ,

You're right; currently, there's no direct way to access and use streaming datasets created in Power BI service within Power BI Desktop.

However, there are a few workarounds and alternative approaches you can consider:
Use Power BI Dataflows:While not truly real-time, this provides near-real-time insights with the benefits of Desktop features.
Use Fabric Eventhub/Eventstream Feature
Use thrid party API connector :-Hexagon PPM Smart API
