Hi @RafaelRSantos_,

Thank you for reaching out, and welcome to the Power BI Community!

Thank you @Nasif_Azam and @collinq for your response. I'm glad to see you provided a accurate explanation.

  • If you've received an internal Power BI report link and are part of the same organization with sufficient permissions (Admin/Member), you may be able to access the dataset and download the .pbix file, only if the export option is enabled.
  • If it's a Published to Web public link, there's no way to retrieve the .pbix source file or trace back to the workspace, it’s strictly view-only.
  • Your best approach is to contact the report owner to request either access to the workspace or the .pbix file directly.

Happy to help! If this addressed your concern, marking it as "Accepted Solution" and giving us "kudos" would be valuable for others in the community.

Thank you,

HI @RafaelRSantos_ ,

The ability to see the file is based entirely on your permissions to get that file.  AND, even if you get the file you will need access to the Data Source as well.

If you ahve the link to the report, you can look at the top left and see "File" and then select "Download".  If you do not see "Download" then you do not have permissions.  You will have to ask the developer to share the .pbix with you.

Hey @RafaelRSantos_ ,

Welcome! If you've received a published Power BI link (such as a link to a report shared via the web or embedded on a site), there are very strict limitations on what you can do based only on that link, especially regarding retrieving the .pbix source file.

There are typically 2 types of Power BI links:

1. Internal Workspace Share Link

  • Format: https://app.powerbi.com/groups/{workspaceId}/reports/{reportId}/...

  • If you received this link from a colleague and you're in the same organization, you might have access to view or edit.

  • If you can see the report and you’re also an Admin or Member of the workspace, you can:

    • Go to Workspace > Dataset behind the report.

    • Use Power BI Desktop to download the .pbix if the option is enabled (Settings > Export .pbix must be turned on).

2. Published to Web Link

  • Format: https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoi...

  • This is a public view-only link. You cannot download or trace back the .pbix file or the dataset directly.

  • These reports are publicly available, and Power BI strips off any trace to the original .pbix or its source.

  • No authentication is required, so there's no way to know which workspace it's from without asking the person who shared it.

What You Can Try

  • Ask the report owner for the .pbix file or access to the workspace.

  • Use Developer Tools (F12) to inspect network calls and find dataset/report IDs (if you have access).

  • Search in Power BI under Workspaces or Shared with me to locate the report.

What You Cannot Do

  • You can’t download the .pbix without edit permission and export enabled.

  • Public links (e.g., “Publish to web”) do not expose source or ownership information.

  • Unauthorized users cannot access metadata or trace the report back to its source.
