How do you update an already published report?

I've seen some solutions on here, such as just publishing the report with the same name to the same workspace, but in my case it just seems to lead to duplicated reports on the workspace. Is there a proper way to update a report with a new pbix file?

Publishing with same name in same workspace is the right way to update/replace existing report

Do make sure if the data source is same if using power bi dataset as source

You can also try to download the version from web and publish it to replace

hi arvindsingh802. Our data source is Athena and in Import mode. Does that mean it is not being recognized as the same data source?

  • Hi Anonymous ,

This shold have nothing to do with Athena and import mode. Can you post some screenshots of what you are seeing when you publish a report with the same name to a workspace?

  • Hi Anonymous ,

Are you talking about changing the report visuals or report data?

Hi djurecic yes I mean the report visuals, although I have not yet set up a gateway for my data source.

    Hi Anonymous ,

If you use the same file name as the original report then wehn you publish it should overwrite existing dataset rather than create a new one. That isn't the case for you?

I have also found a similar post, please refer to it to see if it helps you.

Solved: Updating A Report From a Different pbix File - Microsoft Power BI Community

You may open the MyReport_NEW.pbix, rename it with the MyReport_OLD, use "Publish" button in Power BI Desktop to replace the original MyReport_OLD of same workspace in Power BI Service. In this way, the report ID in embed Website won't change, and it will work as the content of new pbix file.

If it does not help, please provide more details.

hi Anonymous, yeah I've never seen such a window when re-publishing a report with the same file name. I'm currently using an Athena connection with import mode as my data source though, so perhaps that's the issue? I haven't yet set up a gateway for it.

  • Hello,

Facing a similar issue.  I have updated the Data Source in my report (going from one version of a Power BI dataset to a new version) and when I publish the updated report, to the same workspace, with the exact same name, I end up with 2 report with the same name in my workspace.

I do not want the report URL to change (users will no longer be able to access it from the links they have).  Is there a solution to this?

    Thank you!
