Hi all,
I had a question around version control and tracking changes in Power BI, specifically when edits are made directly in the Power BI Service rather than in Power BI Desktop.
My current understanding is that using tools like Git works well when developers make changes locally in Desktop, as those changes can be committed, reviewed, and versioned properly.
However, I’m trying to understand what happens in a scenario where someone makes a quick change directly in the Service (for example, editing a report visual or making a minor tweak in the web editor).
- How are those changes tracked?
- Is there any way to version or audit those updates?
- Are there best practices to prevent or control this (e.g. restricting edits in Service vs enforcing Desktop-based development)?
It feels like these types of changes could bypass standard version control processes, so I’m keen to understand how others manage this in a governed environment.
Appreciate any guidance or real-world approaches.

Hi @mp390988,
yes exactly. And you need Azure DevOps or GitHub as source control system as they are currently the only ones available in Fabric.
Best regards!
Hi @Mauro89 ,
Thank you.
So it is not possible to do unless you have a power bi premium account or a fabric account?
Thank You

Hi @mp390988,
if you want to keep track of changes made in the web interface, you need to set up version control for your Fabric workspace. With this in place every change made in the Web interface (e.g. minor change in a Power BI report) is shown as change, can be commited to version control and you have all capabilities needed like roll-back.
