How can an external data provider share their semantic model with me?
I have been working with a company (call them company A) that has built a power BI model that I would like to have access to in my own tenant (company B).
Company A has followed the instructions per the link below to share their model with me:
Introducing Cross-tenant Power BI Dataset Sharing | Microsoft Power BI Blog | Microsoft Power BI
However when I go into power BI desktop followed by "get data" followed by "power BI semantic models" I cannot see their model and I do not see the "External Data" tab that I expected.
Are there any additional steps that we would need to take to enable the access?
In summary the steps company A has confirmed to me they have taken are:
1. They have adjusted their tenant settings in power BI:
"Allow guest users to work with shared data sets in their own tenants" has been enabled.
2. They have set me up as a guest user in Azure Active Directory.
I received the email and clicked to allow access on the email.
3. They have selected their semantic model, settings, "External sharing" and selected "On".
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as this one has me stumped!
Thanks
Regards
Matthew
Trotter have you done the following in PowerBI desktop -
- checked "connect to external semantic models shared with me" under preview features?
- signed out of your current organizational account in Power BI desktop and signed in with the guest account from company A?
Yes, doing the above will have you unable to see models within your own organization. So please take a look at this article for rest of the steps-

Additionally, this Microsoft article might help with understanding the process a bit more in-depth -
