I'm working on a report that was built by a previous developer. The report uses a shared semantic model (dataset). It seems we may have a need to modify a query being used in the semantic model, but I can't seem to find a way to even view the query that was written to bring in this data.
I'm an admin in the workspace, so I believe I should have any required permissions. Please help!
@aj1973 @GilbertQ Even with the PBIX, i'm still unable to see anything.
I see this in the bottom right when I open the PBIX.
So I select "Make changes to this model" and it pops up a screen with the list of all the tables in the model.
So I select "Submit" and it changes the local PBIX on desktop to a Direct Query connection.
I select "Transform Data" to open Power Query and it opens, however it shows "Queries [0]".
You can't edit a live connection tables.

Isn't that the purpose of converting the local PBIX to Direct Query? If not, how do I overcome the live connection so I can make changes if required.
For example, I know one of tables in my model is created using a native query. What would I do if I neeed to adjust that query?
One of the best recommendation in Power BI is the lesser you transform your data in Power Query the better, meaning if things like building views with native query can be done at directly at the source then be it.
In your case you either build a new dataset from scratch and you can make your own changes or ask the admin of the source to create a view for you need.

I'm not seeing how that is sustainable. Basically, shared datasets are intened to be used across multiple reports. There may be times when the shared dataset needs to be adjusted. I'm not sure how my situation is any different and why I can't edit the shared dataset.
Hi @ERing
Simply download the pbix and edit it in your desktop. best way to visualize the queries applied and DAX measures in the semantic model is by using Power BI Desktop.

Hi @ERing
You should be able to get a copy of the PBIX file from the previous developer. Hopefully that was stored in a central location. If you cannot get the PBIX file then you might be able to connect to the semantic model if you are using power BI premium or power BI premium per user via the XML a endpoint.
