How can I make changes to a shared semantic model (dataset)?

One of the best recommendation in Power BI is the lesser you transform your data in Power Query the better, meaning if things like building views with native query can be done at directly at the source then be it.
In your case you either build a new dataset from scratch and you can make your own changes or ask the admin of the source to create a view for you need.
I'm not seeing how that is sustainable. Basically, shared datasets are intened to be used across multiple reports. There may be times when the shared dataset needs to be adjusted. I'm not sure how my situation is any different and why I can't edit the shared dataset.
