How To Update Microsoft Fabric Capacity Metrics Template App
Hello ManasRout,
Ownership of a template app is tied to the workspace, not the individual who originally installed it.
If the original app owner has left the organization, you can still gain control as long as a Power BI Service Admin or Microsoft 365 tenant Admin assigns you as Admin in the workspace where the app resides.
Once you are a workspace Admin:
- You have full rights to manage the app.
- You can run Update from source when a new version is available.
- You do not need the former owner’s account.
Key distinction:
- Semantic model takeover → refresh control only
- Workspace Admin → full app management, including updates
This aligns with Microsoft documentation: tenant or workspace admins can manage workspaces and assign admin roles even if the original creator is unavailable.
Hi Olufemi7 , Thank you for this update I am in this workspace and I am also admin access for this workspace but the update banner notification not showing for me I got only simple notification but the Template app owner got both banner notification as well as simple notification. This is the reason I am not able to update the app to latest version. How to proceed with this case.

This is expected behavior for template apps.
Only the app owner (installer) can run “Update from source”; Workspace Admin or semantic model takeover does not grant this right.
If the installer is available, they must run the update or add you as App Owner.
If the installer has left, a Power BI Service or M365 Tenant Admin must delete and reinstall the template app.
That’s why the update banner does not appear for you.Hi ManasRout
