Help Needed for Server Connection via Windows Authentication on Virtual Machine Using Power BI Gatew

Hello, good afternoon,

I'm having an issue and would appreciate your help. I'm trying to connect to my SQL Server via Windows Authentication from a virtual machine, but I'm not entirely sure how to proceed. I've set up an On-premises Data Gateway on my server to allow access to the data, as shown in the attached images. However, I'm unsure how to work with that connection from Power BI Desktop outside the server (on my local machine).

I’ve tried making the connection through the Power BI Gateway, but I'm not sure if the configuration is correct or if I need to do something else to work with the data from Power BI Desktop in my local environment. Has anyone experienced something similar or knows the additional steps I need to follow to make the connection work properly?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice you can offer.chrome_sXafX5HBwE.png,chrome_nPlE5p2VSb.png

Think of the Power BI gateway as a headless Power BI Desktop (same functionality, no user interface)

These things are unrelated.  You either work on the Desktop, or you work through the gateway.  Not both at the same time.

You mentioned a VM.  How are you logging in to that VM? Where is it located?  Is it part of your Windows domain?

Thank you for your response and for the clarification regarding the relationship between Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Gateway.

As for the virtual machine (VM), I connect as follows:

  • I install and configure the VPN client using FortiClient.
  • I connect to the VPN.
  • I access the Dynamics server from the VM.
  • I use domain credentials to connect to SQL through Windows Authentication.
  • Then, I validate the available databases.

Is the VM you log in to  in a network location that has direct line of sight to the SQL Server database?

Are the On-Premise Gateway VMs in a network location that has direct line of sight to the SQL Server database?

It is correct, my VM has direct and uncomplicated access to the SQL Server through the network, and my 'On-Premise Gateway' is configured there on the server as shown in the previous images.

my 'On-Premise Gateway' is configured there on the server as shown in the previous images.

VBI   (very bad idea) - do not place an On-Premise Gateway onto a VM that houses anything else (including a SQL Server).  They will fight each other for compute and memory - and will lockup the VM.  Put the Gateway Cluster members on their own dedicated VMs.

Anyway, in the gateway service web page create the connection, and specify Windows authentication.

I would like to inform you that I have successfully downloaded Power BI on the server, and the connection was established without any issues. I was able to correctly view the contents of my database as well as the tables I want to load.

However, my goal is to establish a gateway or connection that allows me to work from my local machine. This would facilitate a more personal and direct management of the data from there.

I would appreciate any assistance or guidance you can provide to achieve this setup properly.

Thank you very much for all your help. Oh, sorry for all the questions and messages I’ve sent, but since this is my first time trying to do this, I’m a bit confused overall. I really appreciate your patience and any additional guidance you can provide.
