In powerBI I am using
Here’s what’s happening and how you can fix it:
What’s Causing the Error
- Atlassian recently updated their Jira REST API v3, which has broken some existing Power BI connections.
- The error message “An error occurred while communicating with another service…” often appears when:
- The endpoint URL is incorrect or deprecated.
- The authentication method (API token or headers) is misconfigured.
- The query format (e.g., JQL syntax) is invalid or blocked by permissions.
Suggested Fixes
1. Update Your API Endpoint
Make sure your URL is correctly formatted:
BaseUrl = "https://cagbrands.atlassian.net/rest/api/3/search?jql=project=XYZ"
Avoid using /jql at the end—it should be part of the query string, not the path.
2. Use Correct Headers
Ensure you’re passing the correct authentication headers:
Headers = [ #"Authorization" = "Basic " & Binary.ToText(Text.ToBinary("email:api_token"), BinaryEncoding.Base64), #"Content-Type" = "application/json" ]
3. Check Pagination Parameters
Use maxResults and startAt in your query:
Web.Contents(BaseUrl, [ Query = [ maxResults = Text.From(JiraIDPerPage), startAt = "0" ], Headers = Headers ])
4. Verify Permissions
Make sure your API token has access to the Jira project and issue data. If permissions are restricted, the API may return a generic error.
