Geo mapping; Bing maps Azure maps

I have Power BI Pro. The sole reason is that I must publicly post Geomaps on the web.

By this, I want to share Geopmaps with a public link from Power BI services.

After being told by Powor BI that I should use Azue maps, which I did, I found out that you can not share them publicly.

So I used a Bubble map (Bing map), but now I have discovered that MS will depreciate them.

I would like to know before I get too far down this path if

  1. Will Azure maps become publicly accessible shortly
  2. Will Bing maps be deprecated if Azure maps are not publically sharable

Thanks to anyone with insight/knowledge into this topic

  • Hi TimH132 -

You're correct in noting that Power BI is transitioning from Bing Maps to Azure Maps for geospatial visualizations. Here's the current situation:

Azure Maps and "Publish to Web":

As of now, Azure Maps visuals in Power BI do not support the "Publish to Web" feature. This means you cannot share reports containing Azure Maps publicly via a web link. The Power BI team is aware of this limitation, and users have requested this feature

. However, there hasn't been an official announcement regarding when or if this capability will be added.

    Bing Maps Deprecation:

Microsoft has announced the deprecation of Bing Maps for Enterprise, with a complete retirement planned for June 30, 2028. New enterprise customers are no longer being accepted as of June 30, 2024, and existing customers are encouraged to transition to Azure Maps

Please enable "Publish to web" for Azure Maps - Microsoft Fabric Community

Thank you for the response. Do I understand correctly. Will Bing maps in Power BI be available until June of 2028?

  • Hi TimH132

As per me Azure Maps in Power BI does not currently support "Publish to web," meaning you can't share them publicly. Bing Maps is being deprecated by 2028, so it’s not a long-term option. For public sharing, consider alternatives like Mapbox, which supports "Publish to web," or monitor updates for Azure Maps.
