Gateway on virtual Azure VM or on-Prem virtual machine
Hello,
I went through some Microsoft learn pages and https://radacad.com/the-power-bi-gateway-all-you-need-to-know but could not find an answer to the following question:
Are there any (dis)advantages / best practices for installing a on-premise gateway?
Is it best to place this on an Azure VM , or on-premise virtual machine?
thanks!
Hi , FilipVDR
According to my understanding and research of the Power BI on-premises data gateway, the Power BI on-premises data gateway can be more stable, and the prerequisite for continuous operation is that it can base on a server with sufficient memory, sufficient disk space (to provide sufficient resources for the spooling of this gateway refresh process), and sufficient CPU configuration. Then such a VM is a kind of VM suitable for Power BI on-premises data gateway configuration, so according to your problem description, whether the Power BI on-premises data gateway is placed on an Azure VM or an on-premises virtual machine, as long as you ensure that the memory is sufficient, the disk space is sufficient, and the CPU configuration is sufficient, after these three conditions are met, then compare and consider the price of continuous all-day operation, and find a more cost-effective solution, which is a more perfect Power BI on-premises data gateway environment configuration scheme.
For the minimum requirements and recommended requirements for the configuration of the Power BI on-premises data gateway environment, you can refer to this document for convenience:
Install an on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn
For Monitor and optimize on-premises data gateway performance, refer to this document:

Thank you for your time and sharing, and thank you for your support and understanding of PowerBI!
