Gateway/Connection Manage Users such on 'Loading'

Hi all,

This has always been an intermittent issue with Power BI but has now become a permant problem. I've seen other people have had the same problem but I couldn't find any proposed solutions. So far I've...

- Ensured the gateway is up to date.

- Tried both Edge and Chrome browers including clearing caches.

- Activated Fabric adminstrator role (Helped in the past but has no effect now).

- Reviewed available Fabric API's but there is no equivalent to the original Power BI API to manage data source access/roles.

I can use the admin centre to manage access to the gateway itself but there is no workaround for managing access to the individual datasources. At this point I'm completely unable to manage datasource users.

Any suggestions beyond raising a ticket to Microsoft?

Kind regards,

David

  • Hi david_busint,

The “Manage users” panel staying on “Loading” is often caused by a UI or service issue, not simply a permission misconfiguration.
    Check:

    • Whether you are using the classic experience vs Manage connections and gateways.
    • InPrivate/Incognito sessions, without extensions, and confirm you are explicitly a Gateway Admin.

As a workaround, you can manage data source permissions via the Power Platform admin center, which uses the same gateway backend.

If the issue persists even there, raising a support ticket with logs and console errors is the most logical next step.

      Hi Zanqueta,

      Thanks for the response.

      • Whether you are using the classic experience vs Manage connections and gateways - I can't see any settings regarding this. I'm using the 'Manage connections and gateways' in the Settings dropdown.
      • InPrivate/Incognito sessions, without extensions, and confirm you are explicitly a Gateway Admin - I'm definately a gateway admin. Only extensions are some company ones that look like they're just tracking usage.

The Power Platform Admin Centre only gives me the option to manage the Gateway, not individual connections.  The Header on the Data page only says 'Manage Gateways'.

      Kind regards,

      David

  • Hi ,  david_busint

    From what you describe:
    • You are already using the “Manage connections and gateways” experience from the Settings menu.
    • You are explicitly listed as a Gateway Admin.
    • You have tried different browsers and cleared caches.
    • In the Power Platform admin centre you only see options to manage the gateway itself, not individual connections.

At this point, it is less likely to be a simple configuration or browser issue and more likely to be a problem with the service experience in your tenant.

What you could try next are the following checks, mainly to gather evidence before involving Microsoft Support:

Test with a different admin account

Ask another confirmed Gateway Admin to try opening Manage users for the same data source from their machine and browser.
If they see the same indefinite “Loading” behaviour, it points to a gateway/tenant issue rather than something specific to your user profile or workstation.

Try the classic gateway management URL (if still available in your tenant)

Depending on how your organisation is configured, you may still be able to access the older “Manage gateways” page in the Power BI Service (as opposed to the newer “Manage connections and gateways” experience).
      If the classic page shows the same behaviour, that again suggests a backend issue;
If the classic page works but the new one does not, that indicates a problem specific to the new interface which Microsoft Support can escalate.

Check whether other gateways show the same problem

      If you have multiple gateways:
Verify whether “Manage users” hangs on all data sources across gateways, or only on a particular gateway or connection.
If it is restricted to one gateway, mention this specifically when raising a ticket.

Collect technical details from the browser

Since the page is stuck on “Loading”, it is important to capture what is failing behind the scenes.
Open the page, press F12 to open Developer Tools, and look at the Console and Network tabs while you click on Manage users.
Note any HTTP errors (for example 401, 403, 500) or JavaScript errors.
Take screenshots including any correlation IDs or request URLs if they are visible.

If all these checks confirm that:
The behaviour is reproducible across users and/or gateways, and
There are no obvious permission issues or local browser problems,
then the next logical step is to raise a ticket with Microsoft. When you do so, I would recommend including:

The tenant region and whether the issue affects all gateways or specific ones.
Confirmation that you are a Gateway Admin and that other admins see the same behaviour (if applicable).
Screenshots of the “Loading” state, plus any errors from the browser Developer Tools (Console / Network).
The approximate date/time and UTC time zone when you reproduced the issue.
This level of detail will usually help Support identify whether you are hitting a known regression or a gateway-specific backend problem.

      Hi SaiTejaTalasila,

I hadn't tried using the Fabric version of service and it works fine there. I'm guessing Microsoft just aren't maining the original site anymore, or at least aren't fixing issues quickly.

      Thank you.

      Kind regards,

      David
