Failed to test the connection to your data source. Please retry your credentials

I have connected Power BI desktop to a SharePoint list using the below connection settings:

Figure 1.png

I have been able to create the query and the visuals in Power BI desktop. However, when I publish the report to the Power BI Service I get an error:

Figure 2.png

If I then go to the settings of the semantic model, I can see a further error:

If I try to edit the credentials of the problematic data source, the only authentication methods available are: Anonymous, OAuth2, and Service Principal. Neither of these serves my purpose as I would need to be able to use my organizational account.

Any clues on what might be going on? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Barattolo_67

Using the oauth 2 will use your organizational account to complete the authentication. So if you can try that,

Thanks, but I have tried that, and it does not work.

Hi @Barattolo_67 ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community forum.

When you encounter a "failed to test the connection to your data source" error, it typically meansthere was an issue with the credentials you provided or with the data source itself. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this error: :

  • Double-check the username and password you entered for the data source. Ensure there are no typos or incorrect characters.
  • Ensure that the credentials you are using have the necessary permissions to access the data source. Sometimes, limited permissions can prevent a successful connection.
  • In some cases, cached credentials can cause issues. Clear any cached credentials and try re-entering them.
  • If you are using an On-Premises Data Gateway, try restarting the gateway service. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.

Thanks for the reply, even if it does not help much. The credentials I have provided work fin from the desktop, which indicates that I have access to the underlying SharePoint list (which by the way I use daily in my work). The problem comes when I publish the report to the PoweerBI service.

When I publish the report, thereport publishes fine. However, after that the PowerBI service stops the automatic refresh with the above error message. In the PowerBI model there is no way to enter my user name and my password. I have already tried to clear the cached credentials. I am not using an on premise gateway.

Thank you and best regards.

Hi @Barattolo_67 ,
Apologies for the issue you are facing.
