Fabric Reserved Capacity Not Selectable for New Workspace

Hello Fabric Experts,

I am doing some tests on the best Fabric capacity to use for our organization. I would like to run some tests on the F2 vs F4 capacities. To do that, I am following these steps:

1) End my current Fabric trial license (Success)

2) Create a Fabric capacity reservation in the Azure Portal (Success)

3) Create a Workspace power bi the capacity in step 2.

Step (3) above is failing. There is no option to select the reserved Fabric capacity, as shown in the screenshot below.

Note that only non-reserved fabric capacities appear as a selectable option.

Hi. Please make sure that your Fabric capacity is running. If you paused the capacity, then it won't appear. If you have just created it, turn it on and wait for 15 minutes just in case.

You must be workspace admin and admin of the fabric capacity in order to asign it.

I hope that helps,

This wasn't intuitive or super apparent after reading the documentation, but a capacity reservation is not a capacity itself. It's basically a discount program that gets applied to any in scope capacities you deploy.

You can define the scope when you purchase the reservation.

To be sure that the capacities I deploy are the only ones in scope for the reservation I purchase, I selected single resource group and then chose the subscription and resource group where I have already deployed or plan to deploy my fabric capacities. That will apply the reservation discount to those capacities that fall within the set scope.

If you have capacities in scope that have higher total CU than your reservation, you'll only get a discount on part of your deployed capacities.

So long story, short. You will never see a "reserved capacity" show up in Power BI Admin Portal or in your workspace settings to choose from because it's not a capacity itself. It's a discount model that gets applied to your capacities (as long as the scopes align).
