Fabric Pipeline with Dataflow Gen1
Hi,
My team is working with Dataflow Gen1 and eventually find out we can utilize Fabric Pipeline to customize refresh of Dataflow Gen1.
I read through Ms document (Activity overview - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn) and it mentions only Dataflow Gen2. Therefore, i wonder shall Fabric Pipeline suport Dataflow Gen1 in the future? hence we can plan for scaling this practice.
Thanks.
Fabric Pipelines do NOT support Dataflow Gen1, and there is no announced roadmap to add that support.
Dataflow Gen1 is:
A Power BI–legacy artifact
Built on the older Power BI service orchestration
Not Fabric-native
Fabric Pipelines are designed to orchestrate Fabric items, and Dataflow Gen1 is explicitly outside the Fabric execution model.
Microsoft’s direction is:
Gen1 = legacy / maintenance mode
Gen2 = strategic / Fabric-native

You want to use pipeline in Fabric, you have to migrate your dataflow gen1 to dataflow gen2, then you can use pipeline to orchestrate.

We currently do not have Fabric licensce so using Dataflow Gen2 is not possible. However, Fabric Pipeline somehow do support Dataflow Gen1.
For example, we go New Pipeline > Activities > Dataflow > Settings > Dataflow Gen2 List. The list includes Dataflow Gen1 and allow to select.
Hence, i would like to know is this a bug or feature? (joking) and will it be fixed to only Dataflow Gen2 in the future?
