External sharing of report or semantic model

Hi all

I hope someone can help. I am going around in circles on this one.

I am admin on Fabric. A user of mine has created  a report and semantic model they wish to share with an external user. I have enabled External Data Sharing in the Admin Settings on Fabric. I am led to believe from tutorials that I should be able to go to the workspace where the report and model is located in Fabric and then select more options on that report and select 'External data share (preview)' It then gives me further options. I type in the external users email address and share.

I cannot see the option 'External data share(preview)'

see image below of what I can see and then a youtube tutorial with a screen grab of what they see.

HI @rredford ,

Have you set up the external sharing settings for your AD as well?  Distribute content to external guest users with Microsoft Entra B2B - Power BI | Microsoft Learn   You might not be able to share until you have that setup.  And, when you share, it is best to share the report or dashboard and not the semantic model.

Also, I think that you have to give the external user the appropriate permissions in the workspace (personally, I only ever share externally in the APP and not in the workspace as I find it more secure.)

Might be captain obvious here, but it looks like in the Youtube screenshot the option is available for a lakehouse instance within the workspace, while from you screenshot it looks like you are trying to find the option within a semantic model options.
In the youtube screenshot the semantic model that the person is probably trying to share is within the lakehouse as can be seen from the way it is nested in the lakehouse instance, it is not a semantic model that is located in the workspace itself.

It might be that your semantic model is based on import mode data load, while the one in the youtube screenshot example is based on the very new option of 'Direct lake' connection

Ok thank you. Can I still not share the Report or Semantic model externally though? And how would I do that?

Sorry I don't really work in Fabric other than being Admin and I am trying to figure this out. All tutorials seem to send me around in circles.

Generally I believe it is the report we want to share to external partners.

Kind regards

Rob
