Error while deploying report to Power BI Service – Need Help

Hi Community,

I am trying to deploy my Power BI project to the Power BI Service, but I am getting an error during the process.

Can someone please guide me on the correct steps to deploy my project to Power BI Service and how to resolve this error?

Hello @Saraswathi_k,

To deploy a Power BI project to the Service, make sure you’re following the correct steps:

  1. Publish from Power BI Desktop

    • Open your .pbix file in Power BI Desktop.

    • Go to File → Publish → Publish to Power BI.

    • Sign in with the same account you use for the Service.

    • Choose the target workspace (must not be “My workspace” if you’re using Fabric features).

  2. Verify workspace capacity

    • Check if the workspace is assigned to the right capacity (Pro, PPU, or Fabric capacity).

    • If your report uses Fabric artifacts (Lakehouse, Warehouse, etc.), the workspace must be on a Fabric capacity (trial or paid).

  3. Check dataset refresh / credentials

    • After publishing, go to Power BI Service → Workspace → Dataset → Settings.

    • Configure Data source credentials.

    • Make sure the authentication type matches what you used locally (e.g., OAuth, SQL auth, etc.).

  4. Common errors

    • Pro/PPU license missing: you need a Pro/PPU license or a Fabric capacity workspace.

    • Gateway required: if your data source is on-premises, configure a gateway in the Service.

    • Unsupported features: make sure preview features used in Desktop are also enabled in the Service.

Best regards,

Antoine
