Error on Refresh Only : Error: Expression.Error: The field 'message' of the record wasn't found..

Hi All,

Not sure how to fix this error as it is odd: Error: Expression.Error: The field 'message' of the record wasn't found..
More info: Its on a PowerBI Dataflow Gen 1, Pulling in from a google sheet table. The field "message" never existed in the sheet, is not referenced by anything in the MCode not a single word is message there as this error points to it being a missing field.

I have tried rebuilding it, putting it in a new dataflow, rebuilding it completely.. all of those things work in Power Query view.. I don't get errors in that view, only on the refresh: Error: Expression.Error: The field 'message' of the record wasn't found..

Anyone have an idea? Any help is appreciated!

  • Hi Ryan34747

Thank you for bringing the issue regarding the Power BI Dataflow error to our attention. I understand that you are encountering an error related to a missing field 'message' when refreshing the dataflow, despite it not being referenced in your M code or existing in your Google Sheet.

To assist you better, I have successfully reproduced a similar scenario on my end using a sample Google Sheet, and everything is functioning as expected.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue :

    • Ensure there are no hidden columns in your Google Sheet that might contain a 'message' field.
    • Review your dataflow for any transformations that may reference a 'message' field.
    • Confirm that the structure of your Google Sheet has not changed and headers are correct
    • Ensure that any dependent dataflows or datasets are functioning correctly and not referencing a 'message' field.
    • Create a simplified version of your Google Sheet with dummy data to isolate the issue.

    Hope this helps !!

  • Hi Ryan34747

Could you make sure that there are no extra rows or columns in your Google sheet before. you finally save your data flow. There might be an extra column which is causing this error.

This might be a strange fix, but can you make your last step of your Power Query be a "Remove Other Columns"?

Can you also check if you have any calculated columns that could be searching for "Message"?
