Error fetching data for this visual - Desktop working, service error

Hello,

Recently, a visual displays this error message "Error fetching data for this visual" when visualizing the report in the Service.

On Power BI Desktop, everything is working fine.

I've managed to isolate the measure that causes the visual to fail, but the report was working fine up until very recently.

I'm the report publisher and workspace admin.

The report uses a dataset using DirectQuery with a Data gateway using a connection to an on-premise SQL Server. No changes were made to the Datagateway and the report.

Any ideas on why the visual suddenly stopped working?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've solved the problem:

I was using a calculated column to build a date column based on an integer YYYYMMDD column. This column was a filter in a measure and as soon as I switched back to the original integer YYYYMMDD, the visual displayed perfectly.

What bothers me is that this report was running smoothly for almost 2 years and suddenly the visual was broken without any modification on our side.

Anyone has an idea about how this calculated column suddenly broke my visual?

Thanks in advance for your valuable insights.

I've changed the parameters in my report to connect to our test environment, and with this connection, all visuals fail to load. This is very strange as our test environment is exactly the same as the production one for this report.

Hello @gck02,

I encountered a similar issue recently. I was using an on-premises gateway with ODBC to connect to an on-premises database, but I kept getting an error message and couldn't resolve it despite numerous attempts. As a partial solution, I switched to using a personal gateway, which allowed the dataset to update without any problems. Have you tried this method?

Hi @APQueiroz

Unfortunately, using a personal gateway is not possible with our work environment.

Thanks for your answer.

Hi @gck02,

If it works on Power BI Desktop but not on the Service my first suggested step would be to inspect the Gateway logs. Below are a couple of examples on how to troubleshoot the gateway:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-onprem-tshoot#export-logs-fo...

Did you see any error in there related to that issue?

And did you check your SQL Server logs? Maybe that also gives you some clues on what is happening.

Hi @Expiscornovus,

For the first step of the tutorial you sent me, everything is fine. An important note, every other visuals on the report are working fine and no changes were made either on the report or the datagateway.

I've sent the tutorial to the people with access to the admin console and I'll keep you posted about this issue.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is a strange one. But they might spot something when they have enabled Additional logging in the gateway. Thanks for keeping us posted on the progress.
